Does “The Iron Law of Energy” mean that we are doomed?”

I recently read Richard Lyon’s article “The Iron Law of Energy” which claims that the clean energy transition (aka NetZero) is a dangerous “move down” the energy ladder, leading to inevitable collapse due to low energy/power density and diminishing Energy Return on Energy Invested (EROEI).

I found his arguments convincing but if we follow them through to their logical conclusion then our modern, complex society could turn out to be an historical outlier. This implies a future much simpler and poorer society after collapse, particularly for regions pursuing a clean energy transition at all costs.

Lyon has extensive experience as an oil and gas operations manager. He is qualified in electrical engineering, power systems and energy economics. Therefore, when he writes about the inevitable collapse of civilisation due to our clean energy transition, it seems to me that it would be a good idea to understand what he has to say and take it seriously.

If you share my concerns I have written a detailed review which you can find on my SubStack.
